5 benefits for starting a new job in the new year

Lady smiling looking at computer taking notesThere’s nothing nicer than spending Christmas not having to stress about work – and, if anything, looking forward to a brand new role you landed before the silly season hit.

And recruitment specialists say there are lots of great benefits to kicking off a new job in the new year. Here’s what you can look forward to.

1. You’re refreshed and raring to go

Chances are you’ve had a decent break over the silly season, and are looking forward to getting stuck into your new role. Your employer will love that too, as you’re likely to be far more productive than someone who’s still burned out from the previous year and possibly dreading getting back to the workplace.

Plus, January has that ‘clean slate’ feel to it – everyone’s open to new ideas, new ways of doing things and on setting goals. And you want to be in the room to be a part of that!

2. You might not be the only new kid on the block

January is peak hiring season for many companies in Australia as businesses plan for the year ahead. So, if you’re starting a new job in January, you might find you’re one of a small band of new employees all starting together.

That’s actually a good thing, because it can be nerve-wracking being new at a company and trying to get to know an established team. Starting with another new employee or two, and going through the induction period together gives you a chance to bond, make friends (and ask questions or share concerns with one another).

3. You’re likely to receive decent training

For many of us (except those in hospitality careers or retail store jobs), January can be the much-needed quiet time after the Christmas rush. It’s when you plan and play catch-up.

If that’s the kind of company you’re joining, starting in January can mean there’s extra time for training and to be shown around the premises. Much nicer than landing in a new workplace during its busiest time and kind of being sidelined – which can definitely happen.

4. There’s more time to get to grips with the role

Employees start to drift back in throughout January, but everyone’s still a bit on holiday time – which is great for you though. You can take your time getting your head around your responsibilities, procedures and policies and how things operate.

As a bonus, your superiors will probably be on hand more and less stressed about answering all those questions you inevitably need to ask when starting a new job. And by the time the busy period hits again, you’ll hopefully feel at home in your new role.

5. It’s easier to get to know your team

One of the most important things to do in your first month of the new job is to become part of the professional community at your workplace – putting names to faces and getting to know the people you’ll be working with.

Talk to your boss about the people you’ll be working with most, and invite them for a coffee or out to lunch. If things are quiet, they’re more likely to say yes and you’ll have time to chat and get to know each other without any major work pressures hanging over your heads.
