7 Great Reasons Why You Should Switch Jobs
It’s all too easy to get stuck in a career rut or a job that you’ve outgrown or don’t really enjoy anymore. And if the pandemic’s taught us anything, it’s that life is short and change is inevitable! So here are our top 7 reasons why you should switch jobs – especially now.
1. You want a better work-life balance
How important is flexibility to you? And an employer who values their employees and their lives – not just the time they spend in the office? Researchers are finding it’s increasingly important. In fact, studies show that job-seekers thinking about switching jobs are doing so not for more money, but for a better work-life balance. And luckily, the pandemic is shaping what experts are calling a ‘high-flex’ economy, where creating more flexible workplaces is critical.
2. You don’t respect the company culture
There have been some seismic shifts in recent years with more expectations of companies to deal with workplace issues such as diversity and inclusivity. Employers are also being called to account when it comes to discrimination, bullying, racism and sexism. If you feel like the company you’re working for doesn’t care or is dragging its feet on issues that matter to you, that’s a sign it might be time to move on.
3. You feel a bit invisible
When it comes to feeling good at work, our research found that being able to collaborate and have input at work is hugely important to employees. If you don’t have a voice or feel heard at work, or if you consistently feel like your ideas are ignored when it comes to work-related decisions, you might be better off with a company that values your input more.
4. You’ve outgrown your current role
Bored with the tasks you have to do every day? Feel like your daily role is a chore? Struggling to stay engaged? Although these feelings can point to burnout (something many of us are struggling with during the pandemic) if you’ve been feeling this way for a while it could be a deeper sign that you’ve outgrown your role and the job’s just no longer a good fit for you.
5. Your goals have completely changed
We all change and grow, and often a job you once wanted and really enjoyed can easily become something that doesn’t reflect your life or career goals anymore. Maybe you’re really keen to get into a whole new industry or role, or you’d like to be in a completely different department. Sometimes you can make shifts within the company you’re with, but if that’s not possible, moving to an entirely new role might result in more job satisfaction.
6. You don’t feel like you’re making a difference
Obviously, trying to feel that your job is meaningful during a global pandemic isn’t easy. We’re all struggling from ongoing lockdowns and the impact those are having on the economy, with many industries such as retail, construction and hospitality under pressure. But Covid-19 aside, if you don’t have meaning behind your work or feel inspired by your day-to-day job, that’s a sign you should look for a role in which you do.
7. You don’t feel welcomed in your workplace
It’s not trivial to want to feel comfortable and accepted in a workplace where you spend so much time. Some workplaces are friendlier than others – but if you’re continually clashing with your co-workers, dealing with issues around respect and values, or you just find the culture toxic and damaging to your mental health, there’s no shame in acknowledging that it’s just not the right workplace for you.
