Is a Career Teaching STEM Subjects Right for You?
In recent years, there has been increased focus from media, industry and government on the significance of STEM education and in particular, the need to encourage more female participation.
It’s viewed as a high growth area offering teachers strong potential for career development. This new emphasis on STEM means there are also plenty of teaching jobs available. Let’s take a look at why STEM is so important, and why a career teaching these subjects might be right for you.
ABOUT STEM EDUCATION JOBS
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics – disciplines that are vital for productivity and societal growth. The teaching of STEM subjects involves an interdisciplinary approach, with the aim being to develop creative and critical thinking skills that can be applied across different areas. A 2016 UNESCO report observed that STEM is vital for sustainable development, and integral to meeting global challenges such as climate change, increased income inequality and international health epidemics.
A CALL FOR STEM TEACHERS
The UNESCO report noted that while there is a growing demand for professionals in these areas, there is a significant labour shortage. Women are also distinctly underrepresented at all levels. One of the reasons suggested for this low participation is a lack of female STEM teachers to act as role models at school.
WHAT TEACHING QUALITIES COUNT?
Teachers are central to stimulating interest and participation amongst students. STEM education can be fascinating to young minds, but it needs adaptable and engaging educators to bring it to life and inspire young people to stay involved. If you have an analytical mind, a strong interest in technology, science, maths and/or engineering, and you’re interested in keeping abreast of new developments, it might be for you. A thorough understanding of current technologies is essential, and STEM educators, like all teachers, require dedication and a keen understanding of how to engage different personalities in the classroom.
