Looking for a hospitality job? Here are 5 skills you must have

man in chef hat smiling at cameraAnyone who’s worked in a variety of hospitality jobs will know that no two days are the same, things can be hectic – but there’s also lots of fun to be had.

Hospitality also offers good career progression and is a rewarding industry to work in if you love dealing with people. That said, you’ll need five specific skills to get a foot in the door.

Here’s our essential checklist.

Skill #1: The ability to think on your feet

Whether you’re working in a busy café or in hospitality and tourism jobs, it’s critical that you’re used to the demanding pace, long shifts, irregular hours and constant change in your working conditions. Coffee cups smashing, clients being sick on the tourist boat, or people complaining about their dinner are all situations you’ll have to navigate with professionalism – and the ability to be flexible and think fast to solve problems is essential.

Skill #2: Being a people person

Hospitality and customer service go hand in hand – and many businesses live and die by the saying, ‘the customer is always right’. Chances are, your boss will be committed to ensuring customers have a positive experience, go away with great memories, and hopefully head to Google to give the business a glowing review. So people skills are essential – whether it’s a flair for small talk or the ability to deal with tricky customers without losing your cool.

Skill #3: Good attention to detail

If you’re cleaning a hotel room, preparing food or setting up a café, you’ll need impeccable attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high quality and high standards. Hospitality staff who don’t have this skill can wind up delivering a sloppy customer experience that’ll invariably leave a bad impression (and kill any repeat business). The good news is, good attention to detail is a transferrable skill that you can take into just about any job going forward.

Skill #4: Being a team player

Although your job may involve ensuring you leave a stream of happy customers in your wake, most hospitality jobs involve being part of a team, too. And teamwork skills are essential to keep the wheels turning, especially when everyone’s working under pressure. Being a great team player means you’re adaptable, can work collaboratively with others, are useful during times of strife. Plus, you’ll always be open to feedback and improving where possible.

Skill #5: Hazard awareness

Knowledge and/or training around occupational health and safety procedures – especially if they’re specific to the types of hospitality jobs you’re applying for – can impress employers. This is knowledge you may have gathered through on-the-job training or just through years of experience, but it’s a great skill to be able to recognise and identify potential hazards or risks related to food safety, fire safety, electrical equipment or slip and trip hazards, to name a few.
