Strategies for Recruiting Great Teachers

Teaching is one of the most important roles in our community. The skills needed in the classroom are changing however, and schools need to be aware of this when recruiting.

Let’s take a look at some essential strategies for recruiting great teachers that possess the modern teacher skills and attributes needed for the 21st Century classroom.

DEFINE WHAT YOU WANT

To find great teachers, the first step is to understand the skills and attributes you need. Start by looking at your best performing teachers and what makes them good at their job. Successfully working through the syllabus and getting good academic results is vital, but also consider the need for teachers to effectively build rapport with colleagues and students alike, reach students that are having difficulties and inspire young people to learn.

THINK MODERN SKILLS

There are some skills particularly pertinent to contemporary jobs in the education system. Computer, app and other tech skills are obviously a must, especially given the speed with which children adapt and take up new technologies. Being able to keep abreast of the interests and obsessions of students is important. Excellent teachers today are proactive, adaptable, innovative and creative.

INTERVIEW PREPARATION IS ESSENTIAL

Draft the skills you’ve shortlisted into selection criteria, with both essential and desirable sub lists. You can also use this as a base to draft interview questions centred on the skills you’ve outlined. Your interview questions should be open enough to let candidates demonstrate situations in which they have used particular skills and/or would use them at your school. An education sector interview is just like any other, and even the best teacher can get very nervous, so start with casual introductions and a brief chat to help them feel at ease. Never rush the candidate to answer nor answer for them. When you have decided on a candidate, don’t offer them the role until you have spoken to referees, confirmed qualifications and experience, and checked their working with children certificate is up to date.

A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT IS KEY

Teacher burnout is an issue across the education sector. In order to attract and retain great teachers and avoid burnout, support is essential. Get the most out of your teaching staff with mentoring programs and continuing professional development.
